The Year of Darwin

This year we are celebrating the Year of Darwin. Our school is actively participating in many different sections and from all the departments. The English Department also wanted to take part in this celebration. We participated in the 14th Anniversary of Parque de las Ciencias, as we mentioned in a previous entry in this blog. Now we want to collaborate with this extract from Darwin's Autobiography together with its correspondent audio. We think it can give a slight approach to his life.

Everybody needs somebody

Here you have a nice song from Blues Brothers. It's a good song from a very nice film, too. On top of that, it's true: Everybody needs somebody. Sometimes we think we can do many things on our own, but you do more and better things if you do them with somebody else. I hope you enjoy the song.Enlace

Darwin from the English Department

Last 9th May the IES Fernando de los Ríos took part in the 14th anniversary of Parque de las Ciencias in an open-door journals. We were selected to represent Granada and we presented a stand with all the proposals of the school and everything done up to now. Every Department collaborated in one way or another. From our Department, the students made a poster with the map of Great Britain and the different cities which were somehow important for Darwin. It was accompanied with a brief comment on each city and the reason of its importance for the scientist.
Moreover, another poster was made with the animals that Darwin discovered in his journeys and they were labelled both in English and in French.
Another activity which is going to be done from this Department is the reading in English of a letter from Darwin to his sister, Susan Darwin within the activity Reading Darwin.

Interesting videos

I can't remember if I put an entry of this page in the blog. If not, here it is. You may remember it's an interesting page with a lot videos you can see in real English, first just listening, then with the transcript and then with the translation, so you can decide on the type of video, difficulty and way of practising. I hope you like it, use it and enjoy it.

Penpals

It's been a long time since I've been thinking about connecting you with people from other countries to practise your English and make new friends. Here is a link from which you can get in touch with students from abroad. Try it if you can and see if it is worthy. If not, just leave. Be careful who you talk to.

Songs and videos in English

Here you have lots of videos to see and enjoy. You can watch them at the same time as you have the words, both in English and Spanish. It's a very good opportunity for you to learn a lot of English and have a good time. You can choose the beginning letter of your favourite artist and choose the song among a long list. It's easy and funny.

As an example I give a song by Take That (Back for Good).

Broadway Station

Last Friday 23 of January we went to Granada to see a play in English. Its name was Broadway Station and in my opinion it was very funny and nice. I talked to some students and they told me that they liked it very much. I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did.I think it would be a good idea if you gave your personal opinion about it. So you should write an entry in this blog commenting on the play. Do it as soon as possibble. It will be part of the final mark. Ah, I must say you behaved very well before, during and after the play.
